I took the unit apart and cleaned out all the lint, the support rollers turn quite easily by hand, the idler pulley turns fairly smoothly without a belt as well. When the drum and forward bulkhead are reinstalled (without belt) it becomes difficult to turn again. I think that just leaves the felt seal, but I'm not sure how to tell if it's worn or not. At first I thought it was from a zippered pillow case making the noise, but now a load of just t shirts is in the dryer and the noise is happening.
